Problem-Solving and Response to Intervention (RtI)
What is RtI?
RtI is a multi-tier model of instruction and intervention
services, using research or evidence-based practices. RtI uses
a problem-solving team to make data-driven decisions and to
monitor all students’ progress. The goal of RtI is to design
instruction that best meets the needs of each student.
RtI Levels of Interventions
Tier 1: Universal Interventions
The school provides all the students with high quality
curriculum, instruction, and behavior supports in the
general education classroom.
Tier 2: Strategic Interventions
The school provides interventions to small groups of students
who need more support than they are receiving through Tier 1. Tier 2
interventions increase the intensity of instruction and frequency of
Tier 3: Intensive Interventions
The problem-solving team develops and implements
interventions to meet individual needs of students. Teachers
continue to frequently progress monitor students at this intervention
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is the behavior side of RtI. It uses
the problem-solving model as well in addressing student needs in
behavior. It, too, has the 3 tiers and uses behavior data as part of the decision
making process. PBS, like the academic side, is proactive in monitoring
students in the tiers.
The Goal of RtI is to prevent problems and intervene early so that students can experience academic and behavioral success in our schools. The RtI approach means students are more regularly monitored to determine progress, and scientifically based instruction and intervention are more regularly customized to meet the individual student needs.
